With a degree in Sociology and a postgraduate training as a Management Consultant, Marcel started working as a Senior Health Care Consultant with Ernst & Young. He then worked for nearly 4 years as Interim Hospital Director at Migori District Hospital, Kenya and over 3 years as manager Joint Medical Store, Uganda. Upon his return to the Netherlands, he worked as Project Manager at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Groningen University and Sales & Marketing Manager at IDA Foundation.

Marcel has served on a range of advisory boards including the WHO/UNAIDS Medical Access Initiative, Uganda Essential Drug Support Program and National Drug Authority (NDA) of Uganda and lectured at various Universities.
